Robert E. Lee Chapter Report
April 2006
By SamiDail Gilley - Chapter Chair
On March 7 th the Robert E.
Lee Chapter of the Society of American Foresters
held their winter meeting at the County Seat
Restaurant in Powhatan. After the meeting
the seventeen members and guests toured Dreaming
Creek Timber Frame Homes of Powhatan. Bob
Shortridge, Dreaming Creek President and
Bobby Shortridge Jr. explained the process
of designing and building custom made timber
frame homes to meet the customers’ desires
and provide optimum architectural design.
The meeting afforded us the opportunity to
see different species of wood being used
in multiple applications according to color,
strength, and grain patterns.
The chapter is planning to
have trash pickup for our Adopt-A- Highway
project in early April. In addition, we are
excited to be hosting the Virginia Tech Forestry
Camp students to a barbeque on May 4 th at
our spring meeting at Holiday Lake.

In November, 23 Robert E. Lee Chapter SAF
members toured the Dominion Virginia Power
co-generation plant near Hurt, Virginia to
learn how wood chips are used to generate
electricity. At the meeting, Awards Committee
Chairman Frank Olah presented 10-year service
pins to Mark Rogers and Jeff Watts, 30-year
service pins to Steve Beale and J.G. Hurt,
and a 50-year membership award to Kenneth
Obye. Chapter members voted to revise the
by-laws, allowing the Secretary/Treasurer
to hold the office for more than one year.
A new slate of officers was approved, with
SamiDail Gilley serving as Chapter Chair,
Jeff Watts as Chair-elect, and Phillip Whitlow
as Secretary/Treasurer.

over the years.
