The
South Carolina Division is one of three Divisions in the Appalachian
Society of American Foresters (along with the North Carolina and Virginia Divisions). The
South Carolina Division has eight chapters or regional subdivisions
across the state of South Carolina. In addition, we have two
student chapters, one at Clemson University and one at Horry-Georgetown Technical College. Our membership ranges from 500 to
600 professional foresters.
Like our
two sister states, we stretch from the Blue Ridge of the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean. Our members practice forestry in
the Southern Appalachian hardwoods, rolling Piedmont, Longleaf Pine Sandhills, and the
coastal plain flatwoods and swamps. South Carolina is a typical southern state, so
timber is a huge part of its economic engine. Our members also manage
for other values like recreation, wildlife, water quality, and aesthetics.
Our Division area includes two national forests. Forestry is part of the
fabric of South Carolina and our members represent the profession
charged with its care and management.
We are
governed by an executive committee that consists of a chair, chair-elect,
immediate
past chair, secretary/treasurer, science and technology chair (who serves
as chair
of our annual meeting), and the chairs of each of our eight chapters.
We have a
three-day annual meeting each June with a location that rotates among the
chapters.
Every three years we host the three-state Appalachian Society of American
Foresters
Annual Meeting, usually in late January. We are the largest organization
of
professional foresters in the state and our members belong to and serve
as officers
in most
all of the other forestry organizations in South Carolina. We contribute to
worthy
forestry projects throughout the state (both dollars and hours). We
are the
forestry
profession in South Carolina.
