Forest
Type
SAF 97: Atlantic white cedar, 10 acres
Description
The Juniper Bay Natural Area was the first
tract to be established in the Appalachian Section
to protect Atlantic white cedar (Chamaecyparis
thyoides). The tract is within Manchester State
Forest in Sumter County near the center of the
state. It is located at the headwaters of Pinetree
Creek within the Big Bay, a swampy area located
5 miles west of the congaree and Wateree River
bottoms at their point of confluence forming
the Santee River.
The Big
Bay is comprised of "ti-ti" (and associated
low ground bush) surrounded by a pine fringe
wet site pond and loblolly pine. Within the
bay are blocks of nearly pure Atlantic white
cedar. Just east of the natural area is a 50-acre
tract of white cedar, which was strip cut in
1944.
Ten acres within a 35 acre white cedar stand
has been registered as the natural area. The
nearly pure white cedar stand is adjoined by
41 acres of cedar mixed with pond pine, loblolly,
tupelo gum and cypress. The entire "island"
on the western side of the bay is 76 acres.
Another natural area of Atlantic white cedar
is the Appalachian Section is the MillTail Creek
