SAF 97: Spruce Pine, 28 acres
Description
The Edisto Spruce Pine Natural Area is located
on a 3,000-acre tract in the South Carolina
Lowcountry. The tract was purchased in 1927
from Charleston Mining and Manufacturing Company,
a phosphate mining company which had mined phosphate
from much of the Baring tract. The area is approximately
17 miles from the Atlantic Ocean and about three
miles from the Edisto River. The spruce pine
natural area is 28 acres plus a 6-acre buffer
zone. The overstory of spruce pine is mixed
with hardwood species. The understory contains
typical shrubs and vines of the coastal plain.
Location
The Edisto Spruce Pine Natural Area is located
on Westvaco's Baring Unit, Charleston County,
South Carolina. The area is about one mile south
of US17.
