Description
The Congaree Swamp National Monument is internationally
designated as a South Atlantic Coastal Plain
Biosphere Reserve (1983). Also, designated as
a natural national landmark (1974). The mission
of the Congaree Swamp National Monument is to
preserve and protect for the education, inspiration,
and enjoyment of present and future generations
an outstanding example of a near-virgin southern
hardwood forest situated in the Congaree River
floodplain.
Public Law 100-524, approved October 24, 1988,
established the Monument as a Wilderness Area.

Richland County, South Carolina.
