  • The Triangle Chapter held it's first meeting of 2011 at Bennett Point Grill on February 28th. The meeting focused on the stewardship forest management plans being proposed by OWASA, the Orange Water and Sewer Authority. Speakers Pat Davis, OWASA and Dave Halley, True North Forestry, gave the attendees an overview of their organization, the property being managed, the management objectives and approaches to achieving their objectives. The management plans seem quite well defined and sustainable, however the recently mobilized local opposition to most forms of management has left OWASA's board stumped. SAF members, especially those in the Piedmont region of the state, are asked to consider how to support the efforts of OWASA to sustainably MANAGE the watershed to ensure water quality, biodiversity, and meet their fiscal responsibilities. For more information, please see the web site at: http://www.owasa.org/whatwedo/ForestManagementPlan.aspx

(L-R) Greg Yavelak, Triangle Chapter Chair with speakers Patrick Davis, Sustainability Manager at the Orange Water & Sewer Authority, and consulting forester David Halley of True North Forest Management Services.
  • April 12th, 2010 - Triangle Chapter/NC State Student Chapter - "Mentors Dinner": The NC State Student Chapter hosted the April meeting of the Triangle Chapter as they did in 2009. The students and professional members shared diner allowing the students to meet, get to know, and ask questions of the professionals about any aspect of their forestry careers. After dinner the newly elected student officers were introduced and student speakers made presentations. We were treated to a slide show of the student field trip associated with the national SAF meeting in Flordia and another slide show of recent Rolleo and Conclave completitions. Additional presentations were made by one student about his international education opportunities and another on student research projects on biomass.

  • March 21, 2009 - Arbor Day Celebration hosted by NCSU College of Natural Resources. Event was hosted in the east parking lot of Jordan Hall Addition. • January 23, 2009 - Rendez-vous at ApSAF Winter Meeting to discus the March 21st, 2009 native plant and tree giveaway and ask for members to start potting up their donations for the tent next to Jordan Hall Adition at NC STate campus. Plants will be "adopted" by local kids and teachers.
  • December 2008 - The holiday gathering at the Dogwood Lodge in Camp New Hope is a long-standing tradition that brings together student and professional members one last time before the calendar flips to the New Year. It's a potluck affair that has the feel of a little family reunion. This year we had a couple of added attractions: a wreath-making workshop and live music!
  • Chapter Meeting - May 7th, 2008, Garden Gate Cafe, 1411 Aversboro Rd, Garner, NC. Guest speaker Dennis Habel, Assistant Professor and Extension SPecialist, NC State University. He will bring us up to date on his research and what recent state and federal energy policy will mean to forest management in NC.
