Gifford Pinchot Medal
The Gifford Pinchot Medal recognizes outstanding
contributions by a forestry professional in the
administration, practice, and professional development
of North American Forestry. The award, presented
biennially (odd-numbered years), consists of an
engraved medallion and a $500 honorarium.
Sir William Schlich Memorial Award
The Sir William Schlich Memorial Award recognizes
broad and outstanding contributions to the field
of forestry with emphasis on, but not limited to,
policy and national or international activities.
The award, presented biennially (even-numbered years),
consists of an engraved medallion and a $500 honorarium.
John A. Beale Memorial Award
The John A. Beale Memorial Award recognizes outstanding
efforts over a sustained period of time by an SAF
member in the promotion of forestry through voluntary
service to the Society. The award, presented annually,
includes a $500 honorarium.
Young Forester Leadership Award
The Young Forester Leadership Award recognizes
outstanding leadership by a young forestry professional
in the development and promotion of an individual
program or project, or for a sustained leadership
role benefiting the practice of forestry and the
Society of American Foresters.
Barrington Moore Memorial Award in Biological
Science
The Barrington Moore Memorial Award recognizes
outstanding achievement in biological research leading
to the advancement of forestry. Presented annually,
the award includeds a $1,000 honorarium.
SAF Award in Forest Science
The SAF Award in Forest Science recognizes distinguished
individual research in any branch of the quantitative,
managerial, and/or social sciences leading to the
advancement of forestry. Presented annually, the
award includeds a $1,000 honorarium.
Technology Transfer Award
The Technology Transfer Award recognizes outstanding
performance in the areas of technology transfer,
implementation and extension. Presented annually,
the award includes a cash honorarium of $1000.
Carl Alwin Schenck Award
The Carl Alwin Schenck Award recognizes devotion
and demonstrated outstanding performance in the
field of forestry education. Presented annually,
the award includes a cash honorarium of $500.
Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award
The Outstanding Forestry Journalism Award recognizes
high quality journalistic coverage of topics that
increase the American public's understanding of
forestry and natural resources. Presented annually,
the award includes a cash honorarium of $500.
Presidential Field Forester Award
Through presidential direction, eleven members
(one from each of the eleven SAF districts) will
be selected to receive an outstanding field forester
achievement award. This process will assure that
each region of the United States will be able to
recognize an outstanding field forester.
Outstanding Student Chapter Award
The Outstanding Student Chapter award recognizes
the top outstanding student chapters and their faculty
representatives for their contributions to the Society,
its student members, and the community.
Student Chapter Website Award
The Student Chapter Website Award honors the SAF
student chapter with the best website design, content,
and web management.
Fellows
Fellow nominees shall be Members of the SAF who
have rendered outstanding service to forestry and
the Society. All applicants must demonstrate (1)
strong continuing commitment through direct SAF
volunteer activities, and (2) exemplary action,
sustained leadership, and advancement of the forestry
profession at the local, regional, national, or
international level in at least one of the following
areas: (a) application of forestry, (b) education,
(c) research, (d) technology transfer.
Election to Fellow shall be concurrent with the
annual elections of the Society. Fellows will be
elected by the voting members of the state, intrastate,
or multistate society from which they are nominated.
Should the total number of Fellows in the Society
approach 5 percent of the total voting membership,
the executive vice-president shall present a plan
to the Council to limit the number to no more than
5 percent.
To be elected, nominees must receive affirmative
votes of two-thirds of the ballots cast. Members
may vote for as many candidates as they wish. Election
questions shall be handled by the Tellers Committee.
Nominations for election to Fellow shall be made
by the written petition of 25 Members and Fellows,
or one-half of the voting Members and Fellows, whichever
is less, in the state society. The petition must
be submitted in a format prescribed by the executive
vice-president to be valid.
Each nominating petition for Fellow must be accompanied
by a biographical sketch of the nominee’s
demonstrated compliance with the Fellow’s
criteria at the local, regional, national, or international
level in at least one of the following areas: (a)
application of forestry, (b) education, (c) research,
(d) technology transfer. The biographical sketch
must be in a format prescribed by the executive
vice-president to be acceptable. Each nominating
petition shall state that the nominee has been informed
of the petition, consents to the nomination, and
has reviewed the biographical sketch for accuracy
and publication.
Petitions must be received in the national office
not later than May 31 of the election year. Petitions
may be submitted at any time, but valid petitions
received after May 31 shall be held for the following
year’s election. Invalid petitions shall be
returned to the responsible individual or state
society for corrective action.
